11 YEARS OF STYLESCRAPBOOK

11 years…Honestly, its impossible for me not to get teary eyes as I type this.

I spent the entire weekend preparing for this post, yet nothing prepared me for the whirlwind of emotions and memories I would go through while browsing 11 years worth of archives…I still remember the day I started StyleScrapbook, from the dining room of my best friends parents house in Holland 11 years ago. I remember running to my friends sitting in the living room to tell them:
-“I wrote my first blog post!”.
-“Your first what?”.

StyleScrapbook was the place where I went to day dream and play pretend I was having my dream job as a fashion editor, sharing my view on the trends and later on, sharing my own take on the trends but taking it a step further and DIY’ing my own clothes and sharing with you the Step-By-Step. StyleScrapbook was my everything, it was my own little project and I never, in a million years could have predicted what came after.

I remember the days where there was a certain “stigma” about being a Blogger. The industry wasn’t prepared and they didn’t see us coming, but from one year to the next you had a group of “Girls Next Door” having a voice in an industry that was seemingly quite impossible to crack. I see at the industry now and how far it has come. I remember working day and night on my blogposts, whether it was on ideas and concepts, or just spending HOURS editing photos so my posts would be “perfect”. I still don’t know how I managed to shoot and post every day, EVERY SINGLE DAY for over 7 years. Then Instagram came, simplifying everything, so the blogs weren’t a focus anymore.

It’s really hard to understand this industry and there are still a lot of misconceptions, but I am INCREDIBLY proud to call myself a Blogger from the Original Generation. It was so hard to gain respect and recognition for what we were doing, not a lot of people understood but we fought hard for our little space on the web and we succeeded.

11 years later, I find myself feeling so overwhelmed and so grateful, that despite the fast moving pace of this industry, I am still able to be here, sharing my style and my life with you.

Every year, I write a post about how grateful I am for being able to do what I love the most for one more year, but as we hit the 11 year mark and I missed out on my decade post, I wanted to write my beloved StyleScrapbook an open letter and even though some might say it’s “just a blog”, StyleScrapbook was my window into the world and gave me opportunities that I couldn’t have ever imagined…

Dear StyleScrapbook,

I thought about what to say to you all weekend and every time I started typing, a tear rolled down my cheek, I would get all choked up and I would stop writing.

Today is your 11th birthday and I can’t postpone it anymore, so here it is;

You came to me in a dream, literally. I woke up one day 11 years ago and decided to give you life. I had no idea you were a blog, but I knew you would be called StyleScrapbook.
You and I have had endless adventures together, you created a new side of me, you turned Andrea Torres; The Mexican girl with a head full of hopes and dreams into Andy Torres; The blogger who managed to become one of the most recognised names in the blogging industry, which is something I still find quite unbelievable to grasp.

I would spend days mentioning all the highlights of our life together, because our adventures have been countless and its impossible for me to pick just a few, so I will limit myself to say that I am endlessly grateful for everything you have given me. You are the most special project I have ever worked on, you changed my life.

I hope I have made you proud and I want you to know that I won’t give up on you and I won’t rest until I give you and blogs the place they deserve again.

  2. Omg this is actually crazy. Congratulations! I haven’t been with you, unfortunately, since the beginning so it’s mad for me to see those earlier 2007 photos. You’ve come so far and it just goes to show the importance of persistence and doing what you love. Of course, we’re proud!!

  3. Me da mucha felicidad Andy que sigas teniendo el blog muy cerca de tu corazón, aún después de los cambios tan drásticos que la industria ha tenido. En lo personal he seguido varios blogs a lo largo de los años, pero el tuyo fue el primero y es el único al que todavía le dedico tiempo, y no solo por la moda, no soy particularmente stylish, sino porque en tus posts reflejas tu personalidad tan alegre y luchadora. Muchas felicidades y por once años más!!

I read your blog since I started mine in 2012, I start my blog because of you, I saw your show at cosmopolitantv “Click” and I was like “how is this girl?” I googled you and discover a whole new world, thank you so much for inspiring me! I change my career from engineering to Fashion advertising 3 years ago, if I never saw that show I would still be miserable in college, not knowing what I love now, thank you so much for creating StyleScrapbook 11 years ago!

I still remember in high school how I would read everything on your blog because I was that obsessed with you and this blog😭we didn’t have smartphones back then and I was only allowed to use my mother’s laptop for school so I go to computer shops (after school, on break times & weekends) and back read everything!!! It’s been almost 7 years since I graduated high school.. You were a huge part of my teenage years and my friends can testify to that. I even asked your permission once to use your photos and post them on Tumblr because I made a fan account for you which I religiously posted on and kept it alive for a long time until college ate all my time (oops!) They also know I plan on naming my future daughter “Andrea Isabel” :”) You keep inspiring me everyday. I watch every story you upload on IG and listen to you talk in spanish even though I don’t understand a thing lol i love you that much! I’ve seen you grow and I’m so proud of you, Andy. Like what you promised StyleScrapbook.. I will not give up on you. I will always be here for you no matter what. Sending much love and hugs from the Philippines 😘😘😘

  6. Congrats dear! I’m a fan of StyleScrapbook since 2010. For years I used to visit bloglovin or lookbook.nu to find your posts. I always loved the authenticity of yours. One of my favorite posts the DIYs of course. But then you, and the rest of the bloggers -I followed, slowly stopped updating your blog and I felt so disappointed. Glad to see that you want to make a comeback. Excited to see what’s coming!!

    PS I remember the day I watched your vlog from your first day of PFW that you were with Denni and you were wearing sneakers.

    Felicidades por tus 11 años. Ni siquiera yo puedo creer que ha pasado todo ese tiempo. Te empecé a seguir desde hace varios años cuando una vez platiqué de moda contigo en Twitter, andaba en busca de encontrar más con noticias de moda. En ese tiempo sólo era una chica llena de sueños relacionados a la moda viviendo en Xochimilco, México, estudiando una carrera que no le gustaba por miedo a enfrentar a su familia y dedicarse a lo que le apasionaba.
    Tú me inspiraste a seguir adelante, cuando supe que eras una mexicana alta que como yo le costaba encontrar ropa, la única diferencia qué yo veía es que vengo de un lugar y familia sin mucho dinero y sin la posibilidad de vivir en otro país, pero me inspiraste mostrando todo ese mundo afuera de México y en mi corazón sabía que algún día lo haría.
    Hoy años después por azares del destino vivo en Nueva York y me dedico al diseño, y tu fuiste parte de eso.

    Muchas felicidades por tu proyecto, te sigo desde hace muchos años pero te seré sincera, no leía tu blog y mucho menos tenía idea que eras Mexicana, solo te seguía por una página donde había muchas bloggers (si mal recuerdo se llamaba BLOGING) fue después de ELLE Mexico Diseña que supe que eras Mexicana y me quemé todo tu blog en unas vacaciones (ahí fue cuando me di cuenta que ya había entrado a tu blog un par de veces, pero no sabía realmente quien eras)
    Ahora que han pasado varios años y leo tus comentarios en Instagram, tu blog. Eres una gran inspiración para mi, amo tu estilo y la capacidad que tienes para crear todo. ✨✨ Brillas y brillas mucho por tu talento, tu carísima, tu sentido del humor y tú creatividad.

  21. Andy, me parece increíble que hayan pasado tantísimos años. En 2010 yo tenía 15 años y mi rutina al llegar a casa después de las clases consistía en hacer repaso de mis blogs favoritos: StyleScrapbook y TheBlondeSalad eran mis dos fuentes de inspiración sin duda. Entraba en este blog y veía a una chica fuerte, que no se acomplejaba de su altura (por aquel entonces yo sufría por ese tonto complejo) y que vestía como ojalá yo algún día. Todos los fines de semana intentaba recrear algún look con las cosas que tenía en mi armario y aunque no te voy a negar que había veces que salía hecha un cuadro de casa (😂) me sentía un poquito Andy y eso me hacía tan feliz! Ahora, casi una década más tarde, sigo sintiéndome inspirada por ti, por ser una mujer luchadora y fiel a sí misma, algo en lo que trabajo día a día para mí. GRACIAS por compartir con nosotros, gracias por luchar por tu sueño y gracias por seguir inspirándome en todas las etapas de mi crecimiento🖤

    Nowadays it is very difficult to find someone who is faithful to himself for many years. I “know you” just and through the blog, of course, but I think you’re still the same and I hope you continue like that :D Clearly you’ve evolved, but it’s always been for the better.

    Unfortunately and nowadays every blogger wants to be everything, model, photographer, musician, fashion designer and artist, illustrator, traveler, “influencer”, and I see the kind of chaos where everyone wants to win followers, make money and be famous.

    I honestly don´t have patience anymore.I think everyone should be in their own place.

    But in short, I wish you all the best and success and more another 11 years.

  51. Andy también lloré leyendo el post, siento que viví junto contigo el proceso de Blogs a Instagram, la evolución del hit de Fashion Blogger a Instagram influencer. A parte durante esa evolución también pase de edad joven a ser “young-adult” y Diooossssss jamás creí que la vida traería tantos retos y que fuera tan difícil estar “al día” incluso es desgastante pero la vida es cambio constante.
    Me da muchísima nostalgia porque al igual que tú me pregunto en qué momento se pasó de invertir horas de creatividad, planeación y edición, REDACCIÓN!
    A solamente hacer un <>, subir una foto con <> y <> o comprarlos!!
    Pero bueno no queda más que agradecer por lo que fue , lo que es y lo que será . Porque estoy segura que alguien con el talento y disciplina que te caracterizan seguirá en este camino haciendo tangibles nuevos sueños.
