HOW TO BECOME A MORNING PERSON. *HELP!

OK, I am in desperate need of advice on how to become a morning person, therefor I started doing a little research, to see if there was anything on this planet that would be effective enough to get me out of bed at a decent time in the mornings. I honestly hate not being a “Morning Person” and whenever I go into periods of getting myself into a rhythm, I feel uber proud of myself and above all, productive!. Lately though, I am finding it harder and harder to get up in the mornings and if it wasn’t for my boyfriend who gets up quite early and tries his hardest to get me out of bed, I would probably sleep until 11am, no joke.

I also think that one of the big factors for me having such a weird sleeping pattern, is that I travel quite a bit. I sometimes feel as if I was in a perpetual state of jet lag and it makes it a bit hard to get into a normal routine. I have even been slacking on my normal workout routines because I just cant find the time, because I wake up too late!

I have been doing some research and in the past couple of days, I found countless of articles trying to tackle this problem, so here are a few of the solutions I found. I will try to test them but I figured that some  of you might be having the same issues, therefor I wanted to share my findings!

Here are 10 suggestions I found on SHAPE.com:

1. Get enough sleep. It may seem obvious, but getting those recommended seven to nine hours will make getting up earlier easier. Pro tip? Keep the laptop and other work out of the bed to sleep soundly.

2. Stay consistent. Try to set the alarm clock for the same time every morning—including weekends. A constant wake-up call may make it progressively easier to jump out of bed.

3. Start slowly. Pick a new wake-up time and gradually work towards it. Want to rise at 7 a.m. but stuck at 8 a.m.? Start by setting the clock for 7:45, and move down in 15-minute increments until that new time goal is reached.

4. Skip the snooze. Disrupting sleep an hour or so before actually getting out of bed may disturb our REM cycle, which helps stimulate brain regions linked to cognition. You don’t want to mess with that (or bug a roommate with multiple alarms!). Set one alarm for when it’s time to rise—and maybe another a few minutes later in case you snooze through!

 5. Set some happy sounds. Skip the beeps and blares and set an alarm tone to something soothing or fun.

6. Let in the light. Research shows a little light may be all we need to reset the body block. A simple solution is to keep the blinds open during the night. Or greet the day and brush your teeth outside! (While waving to the neighbors…)

7. Eat breakfast. Sleepiness doesn’t disappear just from drinking a cup of coffee. Having enough time for some green eggs and ham (or maybe just a yogurt parfait) will also provide energy, not to mention it’ll boost that brainpower too.

8. Hit the gym. Those tired eyes may go away once a morning workout routine is in order. Exercise will definitely boost energy. *( I REALLY WANT TO START WORKING OUT IN THE MORNINGS!!!)

9. Treat yo’self. Have a reward waiting in the a.m. to motivate climbing out of the covers. Dive into some freshly baked fruit and nut bars, or slide into a warm bath instead of taking a quick shower.

10. J.F.D.I. Sometimes we need to bite the bullet and “just f*ing do it.” Researchers have found that creativity may flourish when we feel groggy, so don’t let a little drowsiness interrupt seizing the day!

I also found this cool post on BUZZFEED with illustrated examples. Honestly, I am willing to try anything at this point! HAHAHA.

I will keep you posted and PLEASE, if you are a morning person and you have any suggestions on how to become one, DO SHARE!

  1. Gosh, I want to be a morning person too! But as long as I can think of I am more of a night owl, and my energy kicks in when it’s getting dark. And since ages, I am planning on stop that “snoozing” which is just bad! Thanks for sharing the tipps :) Hope they already worked a bit for you.

  3. Oh I just did a post on this a week or so ago.. feel free to check it out! It’s a struggle to become a morning person but so worth it!

  4. Hola Andy!

  5. Nice post! I’m definitely more a night person myself, so I totally get what you mean with the feeling of being less productive when you get up so late – I have that quite a lot… I’m really trying to work on it, so thanks for sharing your tips! By the way, the BUZZFEED post is actually really informative and funny – that made my evening haha

  6. Hi Andy!

  8. Thank you for this . I struggle and I am a monster in the mornings . I am not a happy camper . So I will use this as a guide

  9. I really needed this, cause I’m always running late for my morning classes. Even though I get up early, but I stay like an hour or more in bed playing with my phone or doing some nonsense.

  10. Dear Andy! Getting up in the morning makes us feel productive. But just compared to other people’s life’s! I don’t wanna say that you should stop becoming a morning person (one day I hope I’ll be too, cause I love sunrises and the calm in the mornings!). But here comes the thing: we‘re living in a society where people rewarded for getting up early. School starts at 8, work and everything else. So the society expects us to get up that early, so do we. But in the end we’re all humans, that product hormones, that regulates our waking-up and sleeping phases. It’s a bit cruel to live against you’re own body.
The same wake-up time, the same amount of sleep every night and a daylight lamp should help to move you’re cycle a little bit forward! Lovely greetings!

  12. I became a morning person in the past year! These are a few things that worked for me:
    – stay away from caffeine later in the afternoon, and try to limit my intake to one cup a day.
    – get 9h of sleep. It sounds like a lot but I think this is why I was never a morning person before. I always assumed 7 or 8 was fine. Turns out 9 is my happy place so I always aim to be in bed 9h before my alarm goes off. Everyone is different so experiment to find your happy number :)
    – if I have an early morning gym session or flight I try to wake up at the same time or a very close time the day before to ease my way into the early wake up call.
    – I have a morning routine I really love! I have some great coffee gear at home and I love cleaning a bit, steaming my clothes, reading the news, and sipping coffee at my kitchen table before I head out. This ‘me’ time in the morning really helps keep me grounded and is a huge motivator to get my butt outta bed and skip hitting snooze. I think when you enjoy what you’re getting out of bed for, it hugely helps.
    – I rarely push it to stay up later. My boyfriend likes to be asleep by 10.30 so I always try to be in bed with him then. I very rarely stay up to read or watch Netflix past this time. Even on weekends, when I feel myself get sleepy, I head home. I know this is boring but I really love feeling fresh on the weekends and ditching my 3am dance parties has made me feel more fresh during the week as well.
    – I don’t nap. I know this works for some peopel, but if I nap I’m never tired at my regular time. So if I’m really sleepy I’ll read or chill but push through till bedtime.
    – I don’t eat 2-3 hours before bed. I always sleep better on an empty stomach.
    – I have some bedtime rituals that really help as well – some twinkle lights in my room, a favorite tea mug, some time set aside before bed to read that all really help me have a great nights sleep.
    – and I travel in different time zones for work a lot. I use melatonin the first night at my destination and my first day back in AMS (the strong American kind ;) and it always kicks me right back into the right rhythm :)
    – I also have an app on my phone for when I travel that wakes me up according to my sleep cycle. It listens to your movements and breathing, and within a window that you pick, it wakes you up when your sleep cycle is the lightest. This always really helps me adjust to a new time zone as well :)

  14. Hello Andy!
I’m not a morning person either. But I sort of have to be, since I have to be at work at 8 a.m. and being very slow I wake up at 7-7.15 am (I’m extremely lucky to be working only 10 minutes by car away) and it’s really hard for me to get up from my bed.
I’m so so envious of those people who get up early and go running (like my mother used to do) or the gym. Even those who have to walk the dog need to get up early ahahah.
I’ve noticed that sleeping regularly the same amount of hours helps a lot (for me it’s 7 and 1/2 hours). Also, since I kept sneezing my phone, I’ve bought an old fashioned wake up alarm and put it on my dresser, so I have to get up to stop it. It’s a bit cruel but it helps ahahah!

    1. thats a really good tip! Maybe I should get a normal old school alarm. I also wish I was one of those people that are at the gym by 7 or 7:30 am. Maybe I can become one of those people! hahaha

      Big kiss!
      Xx

  15. I really need to become a morning person! Since I lost my job, I been sleeping most of my morning! And I feel lazy… And that need’s to stop!! I’ll start waking up early but slowly like you said and maybe incorporate some motivation, I don’t know, maybe to hang out a bit in the morning so I really wake up to the day! :)
    Kiss*

    1. Thats what Im trying to do. Ideally would love to get up at 7am every day, so I put my alarm at 7:45 today and ended up waking up at 8:00am. Counting my blessings here, progress has been made! hahaha
Hope you find a job soon love!

      Xx
